No proposal to form panel to look into Gorkhaland demand: Govt

Centre today said that there is no proposal to constitute a committee to look into the separate state demand of the Gorkhas and others agitating in Darjeeling, West Bengal. <br/><br/>Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said this in a written reply in Lok Sabha. He said, there is no such proposal to appoint a committee to look into the merits and demerits of the demands of the Gorkhas, Adivasis and others.<br/><br/>The Darjeeling hills have been witnessing an indefinite strike called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland. Mr Ahir said, violence and damage to public property have been reported during the agitations. <br/><br/>He added that according to the Constitution, the states were primarily responsible for maintaining law-and-order. <br/><br/>The Minister said, on the request of state government, Centre provided assistance by sending Central Armed Police Forces<br/>personnel.
