The government today said that no proposal has been received from any State Government for procurement of tomato under Market Intervention Scheme, MIS during current fiscal. Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh said the production of tomato is much higher than the demand during last three years.<br/><br/>He said there has been increased production of tomato in the current year because of which the prices at few centres are low. Mr Singh said to safeguard the interests of the farmers and preventing them from distress sale situation, his ministry operates MIS for procurement of horticultural commodities including tomatoes which are perishable in nature and are not covered under Price Support Scheme.<br/><br/>He said MIS aims to protect the growers of these commodities from making distress sale in the event of a bumper crop during the peak arrival period when the prices tend to fall below economic levels and cost of production. The Minister informed that MIS is implemented at the request of a State and Union Territory government which is ready to bear 50 per cent of the loss.
