Underscoring the need for wide applications of radiation technology in the field of development, scientists from the department of atomic energy (DAE) opined there is no need to be panic while using radiation.

Referring the recent incident of Cobalt-16 accident in New Delhi, the head of Public Awareness Department of DAE Mumbai said this incident was not because of use of radiation technology but for due to lack of awareness .

The Vice-Chancellor of the North Eastern Hills University, Shillong Prof. Promod Tandon inaugurating the national seminar today on ‘application of radiation technology in medical sciences’ said of the total 40120 power generated in the country 2.9 percent comes from nuclear.

Highlighting the need of nuclear power for the nation Prof. Tandon said 25 percent power must be generated by 2050 AD. He said France is generating over 80 percent powers through nuclear while USA is 30 percent and India is also committed to be generating half of France within the stipulated time.

Prof. M E Yeolekar, director of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Medical Sciences,(NEIGRIHMS), said radiation is essential in the field of medical science especially for therapeutic and diagnostic services.

Prof. M Yeolekar asked the students and researchers to undertake deep study on use of radiation technology which is also being used for decoding of human brain however he said some complex circles in the brain till date has been remained as an enigma and radiation technology is expected to provide a new vista in studying the complexity of the human brain.

The seminar was organised by the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Medical Sciences,(NEIGRIHMS) and the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in Shillong to create awareness on the said technology.
