No need to convene special session of Parliament: Chidambaram

Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said there is presently no need to convene a special session of Parliament. Mr. Chidambaram said the government has already set up a committee headed by retired Supreme Court Chief Justice JS Verma to review the existing criminal laws to provide more severe punishment in cases of sexual assault on women.

The Finance Minister was responding to a media query on BJP's demand for a special session in this regard. He said the need for a special session for the passage of more stringent law may arise only after the submission of the report by the committee. The committee is to submit its report within a month.
