The government on Friday made it clear in the Lok Sabha that it is committed to revamp AIR INDIA and has no proposal to privatize it. Steps are afoot to bring the national flag carrier back on track. The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. V. Narayanasamy said this in reply to a calling attention motion moved by Mr Gurudas Dasgupta ,CPI, and four others. In a statement, the Minister said the revamping will be done by closing the loss making routes, reducing contractual staff and by taking the employees into confidence. He said the government has pumped in three thousand two hundred crore rupees as equity in AIR INDIA and assured the House that the national flag carrier will be rejuvenated shortly. However, not satisfied with the minister’s reply, the BJP and some other opposition members staged a walk out.Earlier, moving the motion Mr Gurudas Dasgupta blamed Air India with mismanagement for all its troubles. He criticized the government for appointing someone with dubious credentials to head the airline and called for a complete revamp of the organization. Members who participated in the discussion recalled how Air India was once a pride of the nation.
