The Centre has told the Supreme Court that it took a conscious decision not to extend the period beyond December 30 last year for exchanging the demonetised currency notes unlike for NRIs which ended on the 31st of last month.

The Finance Ministry filed an affidavit in response to petitions by private individuals and a firm seeking a window like those given to NRIs and people who were abroad during the period of demonetisation.

The Ministry said, it was not legally bound to come out with a fresh notification to grant grace period or window. It said, the decision not to extend the period was taken after an overall review of the malpractices and irregularities detected between 9th November and 30th December when the public was allowed to exchange or deposit their old money for the new currency.

The Ministry also gave details about the raids and recoveries made by law-enforcing agencies during and after the demonetisation period claiming that undisclosed income of over 5,400 crore rupees was detected.
