In Bangladesh, a committee set up by the government has found no irregularities in financial transactions of the Grameen Bank as reported in a Norwegian television documentary earlier last year. The head of the five-member committee, Dhaka University Professor AK Monowar Uddin Ahmed, handed over the report to Bangladesh Finance Minister AMA Muhith at his office on Monday. After receiving the report, Mr. Muhith said that the transactions related to the Norwegian funds was accepted by the committee as it was also accepted by the government of Norway. The Finance Minister also added that the committee has found that the interest rate of the Grameen Bank is the lowest among the micro-credit lenders in the country.The Bangladesh government had formed a committee in January this year to probe Grameen Bank following reports in a Norwegian documentary about alleged malpractices in financial transactions of funds worth nearly 100 million US Dollars provided by the Norwegian aid agency NORAD. The committee was given the task to review the issue of transfer of funds from Grameen Bank to Grameen Kalyan a sister organization of Grameen and also review the interest rates being charged by bank. The committee’s report vindicates Grameen Bank’s stand that there has been no financial irregularities. The committee’s finding is in line with an earlier investigation done by the Norwegian government which had also found that the Bank was not involved in any corrupt practices. However the fate of Grameen bank’s Founder Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus who has been removed from the post of the Managing Director depends on the outcome of the cases pending before the country's Supreme Court.
