Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the state will not backtrack on its demand for construction of a new dam in Mullapperiyar decommissioning the present one.Addressing the media in Thiruvananthapuram after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday Chandy said that he will be reaching Delhi on Thursday to meet Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh seeking immediate central help.Considering safety of thirty lakh people, he said the water level of the 116 year old dam needs to be reduced to 120 feet at the earliest. Chandy said that due to safety concerns the state cannot afford to wait for Supreme Court decision.Assuring supply of water to Tamil Nadu Chandy said that Kerala wants to sort out Mullperiyar dam issue maintaining good relation with the neighbouring state. Meanwhile, both opposition leader V S Achuthanandan and KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala along with prominent leaders of their parties visited the dam on Wednesday. The hunger strike of CPI MLA Bijimol has entered the fourth day on Wednesday.Mass agitation across Idukki district has further intensified.At the same time, the water level of the Mullpperiyar dam continues to be above the permissible level of 136 feet.
