No forward movement in standoff between AI Management and striking pilots

There has been no forward movement in the standoff between the Air India Management and the striking pilots even after the Delhi High Court appointed a Counsel to assist both parties in resolving the issue. The Court had slapped contempt notices to nine office bearers of pilots' union for disobeying its order to call-off the strike and has given two weeks time to the pilots to respond to the notice. The management said it is ready to hold talks and reinstate the sacked pilots if they call-off their strike immediately and resume duties. The pilots on the other side maintained that they will join work only after a fixed time frame is set to look into their demands of pay parity and CBI investigation into the alleged mismanagement and corruption in the national carrier. The Civil Aviation Minister Vyalar Ravi will brief the Prime Minister on the issue later in the day. The striking pilots had written to the Prime Minister on Tuesday to look into their demands. With almost 90 percent its domestic flights cancelled, the cash strapped public carrier continues to incur heavy losses. The management has made alternate arrangements for the stranded passengers on major trunk routes. An Air India official said that with the bookings closed for the last five days, there is no major backlog. He added that the decision on when to reopen the bookings will be taken later today.
