The US has indicated that it would make no significant emission reduction commitments to tackle global warming at the climate change talks in Copenhagen next month. The US Energy Secretary Steven Chu told reports in New Delhi that the US legislation aims to cut fossil-fuel emission to 17 per cent below 2005 levels by 2020 and 83 per cent in 2050. The EU has committed unconditional emission cut to at least 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020. It has offered to scale up emission cuts to 30 per cent if other developed nations follow suit. Chu said the US did not want a repeat of the Kyoto protocol when it signed international climate agreement negotiated in part by then US Vice President AI Gore which was later rejected by Senate.Meanwhile, France says New Delhi’s role at the Copenhagen Conference will be decisive to get away from all the arguments and negotiations and starting work for a positive and shared project.
