The Obama administration has said that there is no contradiction in its commitment to the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and endorsement of India, which is not a signatory to the accord, for permanent membership of the UN Security Council. In response to a question, the State Department said there had been no change in the US position regarding nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. It said the United States and India shared this vision and would continue to work together towards that goal. The State Department said India played a significant and responsible role in the world today, and the UN Security Council should reflect the realities of the changed world of the 21st Century.
