No development activities possible under gun shadow: PM

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that no sustained development activities are possible under the shadow of the gun. Speaking at the opening session of the conference of Chief Ministers and State Tribal Minister in New Delhi on Wednesday, Dr. Singh said that the cult of violence will only bring greater misery to the people. Apparently referring to the Naxal violence, the Prime Minister asserted that this threat has to be countered with determination. He said that while violence cannot be tolerated, the tribals must be the main primary beneficiaries of the development process. The Prime Minister said that there has been a systemic failure in giving tribals stake in modern economic process and the alienation built over decades is now taking a dangerous turn. He said that there is the need to win the heart of these people. He also urged the states to ensure effective implementation of the Forest Rights Act and the distribution of the titles over the land to the tribals are speeded up and completed within a time frame.

Dr Singh said that the improvement in the condition of tribal population is fundamentally linked to the concept of inclusive growth. He said that there is a need to empower the marginalised and isolated section of the society.

Earlier, the Minister for Tribal Affairs Kantilal Bhuria said that the first national tribal policy will be brought soon for the overall development of tribal people.
