No compromise on safety in pursuit of nuclear energy: PM

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has renewed government's commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards at nuclear power plants across the country.

In a letter to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on the Koodankulam Nuclear Power plant issue, Dr Singh said there will be no compromise on safety aspects and livelihood in the pursuit of a nuclear energy programme.

Dr Singh said, the Koodankulam project has gone through detailed and exhaustive safety reviews and clearances have been given by all statutory authorities. He said a number of welfare projects have been implemented by the Nuclear Power Corporation in areas adjoining the plant.

The Prime Minister also said that tapping all energy sources and diversifying the energy mix is important to meet the growing energy demands in the country.

A 22 member delegation comprising political leaders and activists of the People’s Movement against the Koodankulam Atomic Power project in Tamil Nadu, had met the Prime Minister on Friday. Dr Singh assured them of setting up a Committee to look into safety aspects of the project.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, CPI Leader D Raja said, the Prime Minister informed them that the Committee will consist of representatives from the Centre, the State and members protesting against the project.
