Telecom Users across the country will be relieved from unsolicited commercial calls and messages from on Tuesday onwards. The Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal formally inaugurated the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations 2010. The regulations will enable consumers to register themselves on the National Consumer Preference Register, NCPR by simply dialling 1909 or sending an SMS to this number. Mr Sibal said that the new regulations are a historic step in Indian Telecommunication. Under the new regulations, telemarkeeters will also have to register themselves on the NCPR website. Heavy fines will be imposed on telemarkteers sending unsolicited calls to registered customers. Telecom regulator TRAI's guidelines restricting the number of SMSes sent per day to 100 by private mobile phone numbers also come into force from today. TRAI Chairman J S Sarma said that the restrictions are meant to protect consumers from unregisterd telemarketeers. He however said that, certain categories are exempted from these restrictions which include transactional messsages related to banking operations, educational institutions and the like.
