No business transacted in RS for second consecutive day due to uproar on conversions issue

The Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments for the second day today on the issue of religious conversion with the opposition persisting for Prime Minister's statement. The House witnessed five adjournments throughout the day before adjourning finally for the day.

The Rajya Sabha could not transact any legislative business today with the opposition and treasury bench members engaged in heated arguments every time the House re-assembled. Congress' Anand Sharma alleged that the government is not allowing opposition to raise its voice. On the other hand, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, the government is ready for a discussion on the issue.

Taking note of the situation, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien asked members from both sides not to violate the tradition of not disturbing the Leader of the House and the Leader of Opposition while speaking in the House. The Insurance Amendment Bill which was listed for today could not be taken up for consideration due to continuous disruption.
