In Karnataka, controversial religious guru Nityananada Swami was sent to jail for a day by a local court in Ramanagaram today. Disallowing his appeal to surrender, Judge Komala sent him to jail for a day after directing him to appear before her tomorrow. Nityananda had also moved the Karnataka High Court for quashing the FIR issued against him and his disciples. His petition in High Court was adjourned for hearing to June 15, after the Judge directed the state government to file its objections. Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda had ordered arrest of the godman and sealing of his ashram, after complaints of sexual abuse surfaced against him. Ramanagaram police have searched the ashram premises since the last two days for evidence of alleged immoral and objectionable activities there. Nityananda also faces a rape case filed in 2010 following telecast by a Tamil TV channel of a video showing him in sexual acts. He has been on bail since June 2010.
