Nitish Kumar resigns as Bihar CM

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kuamr has resigned a day after his party JDU was routed in the general elections. Addressing a press conference in Patna, Nitish Kumar said that, he took the moral responsibility for his party’s poor performance in the elections and steps down from the post of chief minister.

But, he maintained that the decision JDU took to break away from BJP was fully right. He said BJP only betrayed him but he had not.

Nitish Kumar said he also submitted his resignation to the Bihar Governor D. Y. Patil, but he has not asked for dissolution of assembly. He said that, other parties can explore the possibility of forming the government in Bihar.

He said that party will discuss election results and party MLAs will meet tomorrow to choose their leader. Nitish Kumar said, this kind of communal polarization has never happened before. But, he said, since the BJP had got the mandate, they will form the government. He hoped that they fulfill the wishes of the people. His party, he said, will continue to work on the lines of its agenda and ideologies.

AIR correspondent reports that out of 40 Lok Sabha seats Nitish Kumar party’s JD(U) has won only two seats against 20 it won last time. The BJP has won 22 seats while its partner the LJP has won 6 and RLSP three. The Congress has won just two, RJD four and NCP one.

Janta Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav today said a new Chief Minister candidate in Bihar will be decided tomorrow. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, he said a new government will be formed in the state and it will be of JD(U). Yadav also said his party is ready to sink differences with RJD Chief Lalu Prasad for forming a secular alliance government in Bihar.
