Nirupama Rao visiting war-torn areas of S Lanka

In Sri Lanka, the visiting Foreign Secretary, Nirupama Rao today visited Mullaithivu on her second day of the tour to the country. She met a few recently resettled people in the region and distributed relief material to them which includes tin roofing sheets and agricultural implements . Speaking to the civilians, she assured them India is ready to open its heart to rebuild , resettle and restore livelihoods in the war ravaged Northern Province. Later Ms Nirupama Rao flew to the Trincomalee and had a cordial meeting with the Chief Minister Pillyan and the Governor of the Northern Province, Mohan Wijewickrama. In her meeting with Chief Minister Pillyan , she emphasized the need to identify the beneficiaries of the proposed 5000 houses. She said priorities may be given to the widows, disabled and the elderly people . She also extended an invitation to Mr Pillyan to visit India. In the afternoon, Ms Rao is scheduled to meet the Tamil National Allaince parliamentarians and Tamil leaders of other political parties . The Indian Foreign Secretary will also call on the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and likely to discuss the resettlement issue and the utilization of the Indian aid . The issue of political settlement of the Tamils may also be taken up. Ms Nirupama Rao is on a three day visit to the island nation to get a first hand assessment of the resettlement process and the utilization of the Indian aid to the war affected civilians .
