Nirupama Rao in Sri Lanka

The Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao is arriving in Sri Lanka on a three-day trip starting from today to get an overview of the progress of resettlement of war-displaced Tamil people in the north and discuss utilisation of Indian aid.India had announced sometime back that a senior official from the External Affairs Ministry would travel to the island nation for a first hand assessment of the Indian aid for relief and rehabilitation of the nearly three lakh displaced Tamil civilians.AIR Colombo correspondent reports that during her visit, Ms Rao is likely to meet the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa .According to sources, team of Indian officials are in discussion with their Sri Lankan counterparts to start the pilot project of 1000 houses in the North. Suitable locations in each of the five districts of the North are being identified for the purpose. In June this year, during the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised that India will build 50,000 houses for the war displaced civilians. The visit of Ms Rao is taking place within days after Sri Lanka’s Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s trip to India. Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Presidential Secretary Lalith Weerathunga were also in New Delhi last week. According to a statement released by the Sri Lankan high commission in New Delhi on Friday, Minister Rajapaksa, ‘briefed his Indian counterparts on the progress made in de-mining the conflict affected areas in the North, resettling the internally displaced persons as well as the progress made to restore the livelihood of the people in the northern and eastern provinces.’ Since the end of the war in May last year, India has been engaged in major operations to provide relief to the displaced Tamil civilians and re-build the damaged infrastructure in the northern and eastern provinces.
