Nirbhaya case: SC confirms death sentence to convict, rejects review plea

<span style="color: #222222;">In the Nirbhaya gang rape-and-murder case, the Supreme Court has dismissed the review plea of Akshay Kumar Singh and confirmed the capital punishment awarded to him.<br />'' <br />'' He sought review of the 2017 judgement upholding his death penalty.<br />'' <br />'' With this verdict, the review petitions of all the four death row convicts in the case stand dismissed by the apex court.<br />'' <br />'' Dismissing the plea of Akshay, a three-judge bench headed by Justice R Banumathi yesterday said there was no error apparent on the face of the record and none of the grounds raised by him calls for review of the 2017 judgement.<br />'' <br />'' Akshay was the cleaner of the bus in which the 23-year-old paramedic student was gang-raped.  <br />'' <br />'' The top court announced the verdict within hours of having reserved it yesterday morning. The parents of the victim were also present in the court.<br />'' <br />'' After the verdict was pronounced, Akshay's counsel sought three weeks to file a mercy petition before the President.<br />'' <br />''<br />''Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that one week is prescribed under the law for filing the mercy petition.</span><br />
