The issue of derogatory remarks by Union Minister Niranjan Jyoti continued to rock the Parliament for the fourth day today as the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2.30 PM while Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed in Lok Sabha to end the impasse on the matter.

In Rajya Sabha, the opposition continuously insisted on moving a resolution for sacking of Union Minister Niranjan Jyoti for her derogatory remarks. Raising the matter when the House reassembled at noon, Sitaram Yechuri of the CPIM sought permission from the Chair to move the resolution.

Stating that the House was not satisfied with the Prime Minister’s statement yesterday on the issue, Mr Yechuri claimed that the resolution will solve the prevailed impasse and bring normalcy in the Upper House. He recalled that the House had earlier passed a resolution for protecting the communal amity and harmony.

Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari has rejected outright the suggestion by Mr Yechuri that Prime Minister’s statement and his proposed resolution be put to vote in the House. The Chairman also rejected the proposal saying the resolution required an advance notice.Ministers including Ravi Shankar Prasad took strong exception to the opposition move saying that it requires consent of the House.

The Chairman suggested members to discuss the matters of political process outside the House. As noisy scenes continued he adjourned the House till 2.30 PM. Earlier, the House witnessed two adjournments, first for an hour and later for 15 minutes.

In Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today appealed members to allow the House to function. Making a statement in the lower house on controversial remarks made by Union Minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, the Prime Minister said that the Minister has already apologized. He said that he has already cautioned that that sort of language is unacceptable.

Mr Modi said, the minister is a first-time member and comes from a rural background. He said the House should allow the matter to rest now as the Minister has already apologized. In this context, Prime Minister thanked the Opposition for allowing the House to conduct its scheduled business for the last three days.

Earlier, opposition members belonging to Congress, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress staged a walk out demanding the sacking of the Minister Niranjan Jyoti. The agitating members tied black clothes around their mouths.
