Nine killed in Kota bridge collapse; rescue operations continue

In Rajasthan, the death toll due to the collapse of a bridge over Chambal river at Kota yesterday has risen to nine with 3 more bodies recovered from the debris. Five injured persons are being treated in a hospital in Kota. More than 40 people including some engineers are still trapped in the debris. Rescue operation is going on at the site with the help of Army. Senior Police and administrative officials are present at the site. The Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the site today. The Centre has announced compensation of 10 lakh rupees each to the families of those killed and two lakh rupees to injured.<br/> <br/>The State govt. already announced an exgratia payment of two lakh rupees each for the next of kin of those killed and one lakh for the injured. The accident occurred when 35 meter long steel structure of the under construction bridge over Chambal river on NH 76 collapsed. The state govt has announced an inquiry of this accident by divisional commissioner of Kota. A Case of criminal negligence has also been registered against two companies constructing the bridge. Two top officials construction companies were arrested today.<br/>
