Nigeria's Boko Haram frees 21 kidnapped Chibok girls after 2-1/2 years

In Nigeria, 21 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram more than two years ago were freed. <br/><br/>Government and military officials said in Maiduguri that, it is the first release since nearly 300 girls were taken captive in 2014 from their school. Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said,the release was negotiated between the Government and Boko Haram, with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Swiss government acting as intermediaries. He said negotiations would continue for the release of the other students. <br/><br/>Unconfirmed reports say, the girls were released in exchange of four detained Boko Haram leaders, but Information Minister Lai Mohammed said there was no swap.<br/><br/> According to reports, many of the girls freed yesterday were carrying babies.
