Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua has held a meeting with the leader of the main rebel movement in the Niger delta. The meeting attended by the rebel leader Henry Okah follows a ceasefire with the group in October bringing to a halt to attacks which badly disrupted oil production. Both sides attending the meeting described them as frank and fruitful. The rebel group The Movement For the Emancipation of the Niger delta which fought for the rights of local people, has been disarming its fighters and handing over their weapons. In return, President YarAdua has promised real benefits for the people of the delta who believe they have been ignored and marginalised for years. The President is planning new road and rail links, more money for local projects and the key rebel demand for a share of the area's vast oil revenues.
