Nigerian President commits to punish those behind Christmas violence

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan says, his government will do all it can to find and punish those behind a wave of violence that has left 38 people dead over the Christmas period. The worst of the violence was in villages near the central city of Jos, where police say seven explosions killed 32 people and injured 74. Nigeria's army chief says he suspects the attacks were carried out by terrorists, but does not know specifically who is to blame. The president pledged that those behind the bombings would be brought to justice. Jos, the capital of Plateau state, is in the so-called middle-belt region between the predominantly Muslim north and the mainly Christian south and has long been a hotspot of ethnic and religious friction in Nigeria.
