Nigerian President announces plan to develop power generating network

The Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has announced a multi-billion dollar plan to redevelop the country's notoriously inefficient power generating network. It will mean selling-off State power monopoly and attracting private companies to build new generating plants.Blackouts are a daily occurrence in Nigeria where demand for electricity is almost double the current supply of 2000 Megawatts. The Government wants to boost generation to 14,000 megawatts by 2013.The West African nation is continents most populous. It is also Africa's biggest producer of oil and has the continent's largest proven gas reserves. However, poor infrastructure has hampered efforts to generate enough power to meet demand.
