The Government of Nigeria has employed 12,000 young people to protect oil and gas pipelines in the Niger Delta. The Minister for Petroleum Resources said the youth will patrol some 5,000 kilometres of pipeline and try to prevent it from being vandalised. Earlier this week, a number of people were killed in the explosion at a pipeline after it was damaged by locals trying to steal the oil.
