NIA begins probe into killings in Assam’s Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun the initial process of investigation into the recent killings by militants in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam.

The Centre had handed over to NIA enquiry of 4 cases registered in the two districts. NIA sources told AIR that the agency has begun ground works to expedite the investigations. NIA officials from New Delhi are likely to arrive Assam to carry forward the enquiry.

Meanwhile, situation has improved in the violence-hit areas. Barring one or two stray incidents, no major untoward incident has been reported. The Assam government has taken steps to provide health care facilities at relief camps.

Talking to AIR, Principal Secretary of Health department Sanjeev Kumar said that proposal has been sent to the Centre for seeking sanction of additional fund of 19.9 crore rupees. Over 1 lakh 20 thousand people are taking shelter in relief camps.
