National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging death of a Sri Lankan refugee in police custody at Chennai in Tamil Nadu. NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu calling for reports within four weeks. <br/><br/>As per the media report, Mohan died while he was in police custody due to the severe torture by the police. Mohan was taken into custody after Chennai Crime Branch received information that he had connections with people who prepared forged passports. The victim's wife and other family members have alleged that the death was due to brutal treatment by police.
