The National Human Rights Commission today issued a notice to the Bihar government over the recent hooch tragedy incident in the state. Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report on several deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor in various districts of Bihar, the Commission has sought a detailed report from the State Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police on the matter within six weeks. The NHRC said the report should include the status of the FIR registered by the police, medical treatment of the victims, who are hospitalized, and compensation if any, granted to the aggrieved families. The Commission also wants to know about the action taken against the delinquent officers, responsible for the tragedy.
''
''Expressing serious concern over the reported hooch tragedy, it observed that going by the contents of the media report, if true, indicates that the State Government, prima-facie, is not attentive enough in the implementation of prohibition policy and sale and consumption of illicit liquor implemented in Bihar since 2016. The recurrence of liquor tragedy of this magnitude is a serious issue causing the violation of rights to life of vulnerable people. The Human Rights body also recalled the deaths reported in December last year in a hooch tragedy and on-the-spot investigation by its own team.
