NHRC notice to Centre, JKhand govt over non-payment of retirement

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued notices to Centre, Jharkhand government and others over reported non-payment of retirement and pensions benefits to several retired teachers of Universities in Jharkhand. <br/><br/>Taking a suo motu cognizance of media reports, the Commission has sought reports from Union Human Resource Development Secretary, UGC Chairman, Vice-Chancellor of Sidhu Kanho Murmu University, Dumka and State Health Secretary in the matter within two weeks. The NHRC observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of non-release of retirement benefits impinging upon human rights to life, liberty, dignity and healthcare of retired professors. <br/><br/>According to the media reports, a 70 years old former professor at Deoghar College retired in 2009 and died last year due to the lack of financial support for better medical treatment. It was reported that his retirement arrears were pending with the Sidhu Kanho Murmu University. Reportedly, a teacher's association of Jharkhand had also claimed that at least ten retired professors in the state have died due to lack of funds for better treatment.
