NHRC issues notice to Odisha govt over undignified treatment to dead women

The National Human Rights Commission,NHRC has issued a notice to the Odisha government over media reports alleging undignified treatment to two dead women by the concerned authorities in the State. Taking suo motu congnisance of the reports, the NHRC issued notice to the State Chief Secretary calling for a report in four weeks. <br/><br/>The first incident relates to a man carrying his wife's body for 10 kilometers as the district hospital at Bhawanipatna did not provide ambulance facility. The second incident is also about the non-availability of an ambulance due to which an old woman's body was slung on a bamboo pole to carry it to Balasore hospital for postmortem.<br/><br/>The Commission observed that right to life of a person under the Constitution would also mean that his dead body is treated with respect and the last rites are performed with dignity.
