NHRC issues advisory to Centre, States, and UTs to mitigate deliberate self-harm and suicide attempts by prisoners

The Commission has observed that most of the unnatural deaths of prisoners occur due to suicide. It has emphasized that the barracks as well as the toilets, where most suicides take place,  should be kept free of objects, which can be used for hanging.<br />''<br />''National Human Rights Commission, NHRC has issued an advisory to the Centre, States, and Union Territories administrations to mitigate deliberate self-harm and suicide attempts by prisoners in judicial custody. The Commission has observed that most of the unnatural deaths of prisoners occur due to suicide. It has emphasized that the barracks as well as the toilets, where most suicides take place,  should be kept free of objects, which can be used for hanging. The Commission has recommended regular check and vigil on bed sheets and blankets of inmates to ensure that these are not used to make ropes, to attempt suicide. Existing vacancies of Prison staff should be filled up particularly those of Prison Welfare Officers, Probation Officers, Psychologists, and Medical Staff.<br />''<br />''<span style="color: #252525;">The Commission has written a letter to all the Chief Secretaries of States and Administrators of Union Territories, Ministry of Home Affairs and all Director General Prisons. It has asked for the implementation of its recommendations and sought action taken report within three months.</span><br />
