NHRC in favour of watchdog to resolve patients' woes: Joseph

Patients aggrieved with healthcare provided at private hospitals need a better redressal system, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said yesterday. Acting chairperson of NHRC, Justice Cyriac Joseph said the Commission would soon recommend to Centre and state governments to set up a regulatory body to address the same.

He noted that medical councils were not empowered to take action against hospitals. There should be a law to curb irregularities prevailing in hospitals across the country and therefore there must be a regulatory body, which will look into the complaints filed against erring hospitals, he added.

A three-member team of the NHRC chaired a two-day public hearing on healthcare woes and cases of medical negligence for four States of the western region in Mumbai, which concluded yesterday. The commission will hold similar public hearings in other regions.
