NHRC emphasises on need for strengthening SHRCs

The National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) today emphasied on the need for providing sufficient manpower and infrastructure to strengthen the State Human Rights Commissions(SHRCs). Addressing the meeting with SHRCs in New Delhi, the Chairman of NHRC, Justice K G Balakrishnan said that Human Rights Commissions are important for good governance and granting social, cultural and economic rights to the people. He asked State Commissions to improve their Complaint Management Systems with the assitance of NHRC. He added that NHRC should help in training of personnel of State Commissions in the area of human rights. An official release says at present there are 18 Human Rights Commissions in the country and recently governments of Jharkhand and Sikkim have also notified constitution of the State Human Right Commissions. Justice Balakrishnan called upon to set up State Commissions at the earliest in the states where such commissions are not there.
