National Human Rights Commission, NHRC on Thursday demanded that 9th December be declared Human Rights Defenders Day to acknowledge those working for the creation and sustenance of rights aware and rights respecting civil society.

In a statement issued by NHRC, the Commission believes that December 9, which is the day when the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders was adopted by United Nations in 1998.

It said the international community are increasingly realising and acknowledging the role and contribution of Human Rights Defenders in strengthening the human rights regime throughout the globe.
