National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson Justice H L Dattu on Thursday said that attack on media by persons who want to prevent the truth of their misdemeanours to be disclosed in public are condemnable as it not only curbs the freedom of the press, but also significantly emasculate democratic processes.<br/>Inaugurating a workshop on the 'Role of Media in protection of Human rights' at National Law School University of India in Bengaluru, he said such incidents need to be taken up very seriously by all concerned Governments so that the 'voice of democracy' is protected in every sense.<br/><br/>The former CJI said it was important to understand that the working of media is shaped and transformed by the prevailing socio-cultural and political context. He said media should play a role to bring positive changes in the society that can protect the rights of the weakest and most marginalised.<br/><br/>Justice Dattu said, unfortunately, in recent times, it was observed that 'mainstream' media often fails to reflect some of the pressing challenges that confront marginalised sections, including dalits, adivasis, women, rural and urban poor and workers in the organised and unorganised sectors among others.
