NHRC asks states to submit details of population policies

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has asked the state governments to submit the details of the population policies framed by them in their state. In a letter to the state governments, the Commission has observed that some states had adopted the method of giving incentives and disincentives for adopting small family norms, which is a gross violation of human rights, particularly women's reproductive rights.

The NHRC has asked each state to inform whether its population or health policy has set any targets for achieving total fertility ratio, contraception prevalence rate, institutional delivery, registration of births, and marriages and other reference to small family.

The Commission has also asked for details on Balika Samridhi Yojana and other similar schemes to promote survival and care of girl child. It has sought the details of the implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act including the cases booked, convictions and pending cases.
