The blockade of National Highway 52 at Lakhimpur in Assam by the anti-dam activists has hit the supply of fuel and essential commodities to the three districts of East, West and Upper Siang in Arunachal Pradesh.Hundreds of trucks carrying fuel and essential commodities are stranded on the National Highway near Lakhimpur following continued blockade launched by as many as five organizations since 16th of this month.The organizations are demanding an immediate stop to construction of the 2000 megawatt Lower Subansiri mega dam project executed by National Hydro-Power Corporation, NHPC, at Gerukamuch on the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The protestors claim that the construction of the dam will badly affect the people living in the downstream areas of the river in neighbouring Assam.The Group of Ministers, GoM, formed by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to deal with the overall aspects of the Lower Subansiri project in Arunachal Pradesh had earlier appealed to the protestors to lift the blockade. The GoM had agreed to convene a meeting with the protestors but the date and time of the meeting has not been finalised till now. GoM Chairman and Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi had earlier said that the current stand-off could be resolved only through discussions with all protesting parties.The GoM was formed to study all apprehensions expressed on the impact of the project in the downstream areas of the State.The other members of GoM include Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, Irrigation Minister Ardhendu Dey, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Minister of State for Water Resources Rajib Lochan Pegu.
