?National Green Tribunal has ?asked U?ttar ?P?radesh? and Uttarakhand governments to apprise it of steps taken to clean the Ramganga, Kosi and Dhela and check discharge of effluents into these rivers.? NGT had in April sent notices to the two states, UPPCB, Bareilly municipal corporation and Bareilly and Moradabad development authorities seeking their response on plans to check pollution in Ramganga and its tributaries -Dhela, Kosi and Bahela -but did not get any response.? The NGT has now asked these two states to file their response in the matter on the next date of hearing on November 23.?

The order came following the petition that said 23 big drains in Moradabad and 10 in Bareilly were discharging untreated sewage into the Ramganga, a tributary of the Ganga. Even the affidavit filed by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board? ?said high levels of hazardous substances, including coliform -which is nearly thousand times more than the standard limit -are found in the Ramganga in Bareilly and Shahjahanpur.?

Advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal, representing the petitioner, said? that the principal bench of NGT observed that it is not satisfied with the working of government authorities and directed the UP and Uttarakhand governments to apprise the tribunal of the steps taken by them to prevent discharge of pollution into the said rivers.? ?
