National Green Tribunal has directed the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government to take a clear stand on a mechanism to clean Ganga river from Haridwar to Kanpur. A bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar said that industrial effluents and sewage discharged by industries are the primary cause of pollution in Ganga. <br/><br/>The NGT directed Central Pollution Control Board, Environment Ministry, Ministry of Water Resources, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, UP Jal Nigam and Uttar Pradesh government to devise a methodology to rejuvenate the river. <br/><br/>The green tribunal said Haridwar to Kanpur section of the river contains very high pollution by industrial trade effluents and huge quantity of sewage being discharged into the Ganga. The matter will come up for further hearing on the 11th of this month.
