NFAI acquires film songbooks

The National Film Archive of India yesterday acquired 1,790 songbooks of Hindi films belonging to every decade of the country's cinematic heritage.

AIR correspondent reports that Songbooks starting from 1934 to 2012 acquired by NFAI represent the journey of Hindi film industry in the country. These booklets give a peek into a long forgotten era and are also an indicator of changing printing technology as did the artwork.

It is notable that these songbooks contain not only the full lyrics of songs in multiple languages, but are also a treasure trove of information about the film itself, including the cast, credits and storyline.

NFAI has appealed to the public to come forward with rare, archival material that will help in conserving India's heritage, under the umbrella project of National Film Heritage Mission.
