News on triple talaq is 'mischievous, misleading', says MWCD

Ministry of Women and Child Development has termed the news item published in an English Daily on Triple Talaq as mischievous and factually misleading. The Ministry said the news item incongruously stated the stand of the Ministry. The Ministry has clarified that it has always maintained its stand opposing Triple Talaq. In a statement, the Ministry said, it consistently endeavours to socially and legally empower Muslim women and has always taken a strong stand in support of them. The Ministry also strongly opines that it should have been contacted for clarification before the concerned newspaper put out the story on a subject with such serious ramifications. The Ministry said, in January this year, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi had requested to constitute a group of ministers to deliberate on the issue of Triple Talaq as the Ministry was a respondent in the case in the Supreme Court. It has fully supported the Cabinet's proposal on Triple Talaq to make instant talaq a criminal offence. The Union Cabinet has approved a Bill that makes instant triple talaq a criminal offence and a muslim husband resorting to it can be jailed for up to three years.
