Chasing a target of 139 to win, New Zealand made the reqired runs for the loss of 9 wickets in just 36.3 overs. Nathan McCullum made 32, while Martin Guptill scored 25. Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. They were all out for 138 runs in 37.5 overs.
