The Senate in the American state of New York has approved a bill legalising same-sex marriage, virtually assuring final passage of the law. The state's lower house already overwhelmingly approved a similar measure and New York governor Andrew Cuomo has promised to sign the bill when it reaches his desk. New York will become the sixth, and the most populous state in the US to approve same-sex marriage.
