The Rajya Sabha was informed today that on an average 27 species of flora and 90 new species of fauna are being discovered in the country every year. The Zoological Survey of India has been collecting data on distribution of fauna in India since its inception in 1916. It has set up a permanent centre in Andaman and Nicobar Islands to monitor coral reefs. Also, there is a centre to monitor mangroves in the Sundarbans in West Bengal. <br/><br/>The Centre for Ecological Studies in the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is studying the effect of climate change on flora and fauna in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is located in Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai Tiger Santuary.
