New MPs to be sworn in today

Newly elected members of the 16th Lok Sabha will be administered the oath today.

The exercise was scheduled to begin yesterday but the House was adjourned soon after it met as a mark of respect to union minister Gopinath Munde, who died in a road accident in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the senior-most member of the House, Kamal Nath, took oath as Pro-tem Speaker. Mr Nath was administered oath by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Till a regular Speaker is elected, a Pro-tem Speaker administers the oath to newly elected MPs and conducts the proceedings of the Lok Sabha.

Senior BJP leader and former union minister Sumitra Mahajan is likely to be elected as the full-time Speaker tomorrow.

After Meira Kumar, she will be the second woman lawmaker to hold the post. 71-year-old Mahajan is an eight-time MP from Indore in Madhya Pradesh.
