Iraq’s new Parliament convened today three months after the elections in the country. According to Voice of Iraq news agency, the first session was postponed only 30 minutes after beginning.

During the session, the new lawmakers were sworn in. In the March 7 election, no Political block could gain the majority to form a government. Former premier Iyad Allawi's Iraqiya Alliance won 91 seats closely followed by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's State of Law block, which won 89, much less than 163 seats needed for a majority in the 325-seat parliament.

Recently, State of Law has formed a coalition with third-placed block, the Iraqi National Alliance but the newly created group remains four seats short of the majority.

Moreover the alliance has yet to name a leader for the post of prime minister as INA has refused to support the continuance of Maliki as Prime Minister while State of Law coalition have insisted that the incumbent Prime minister must serve another term. Iraqi security officials and US have warned that delay in government formation could give insurgent groups an opportunity to further destabilise the country, as happened in 2005.
