New IIP Index launched

The Central Statistical Organisation today launched a new series of India's Index of Industrial production (IIP). The new series will have 2004-05 as base year and a list containing 682 items. Talking to reporters after the release of the index, country's Chief Statistician T C A Anant said, the new IIP index will give a better picture of growth in various sectors of the economy because it is more broader. The IIP is index that details out the growth of various sectors of economy such as manufacturing, power and mining over a period of time. Until now, the IIP has 1993-94 as the base year and therefore included a lot of items like typewriter and taperecorder which are outdated now. The new base year is broader and has items like cellphones and ipods among others.
