The Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises is likely to come out with new guidelines for granting Maharatna status to PSUs by June. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Praful Patel said the new guidelines is going to go to the Cabinet in a month. Mr Patel said BHEL will be the first of the block to get Maharatna status. Mr Patel said besides BHEL, some more companies like GAIL deserve Maharatna status which would enable them, to resolve certain issues at the board level. At present, there are five Maharatna companies — ONGC, Indian Oil Corp, SAIL, NTPC and Coal India–and 15 Navratna companies, including BHEL, GAIL and NMDC. Our correspondent reports, recently, the Department of Public Enterprises had decided to relax the norms for granting the elite status to Central Public Sector Enterprises.
